Pseudonym: Enzel, Wesley B.
104-10172-10114: HERNANDEZ SANCHEZ, CARLOS EDUARDO.
April 1960: When Enzel - identified as "Jimmy Smith" on this PRQ 2 for AMHAZE-2523/Carlos Hernandez - recruited him for PM training.
7/19/60 meeting between Bender (Gerry Droller), Smith, Artime - Miami Florida (University Court Motel): "...at approximately 11:30 Jim Brown (alias for Jim Smith) arrived together with Ricardo de la Lorie, Michel Yabor, and Nino Diaz. (to meet Bender/Droller)"
104-10113-10326: A SERIES OF MEETINGS WITH MRR LEADERS, 19 JULY 1960
In describing the above 7/19/60 meeting, Fravel S. Brown writes a memo about how he met with Bender and Artime. It is clear that Fravel Brown and Smith are one and the same. Page 2 shows how Brown did the translating between Bender/Droller and Artime. Page 3 shows how Brown with Lorie, Yabor and Diaz arrived at Bender's room "about 1120".
John Newman, Countdown to Darkness, pp. 127-138, Chapter 8: "Droller, the MRR, and the University Court Motel Security Fiasco".
"There are two documents that clinch the case for the (Wesley B. Enzel)-Smith identification. The 19 July meetings in Miami left Lorie's dissident group hanging in the wind and, while Droller was busy with the FRD in New York (20-22 July), Lorie was suffering from 'anxiety caused by an alleged loss of contact with Jim Smith.' Lorie and his group assumed that 'they had been dumped'. So, on 23 July, Droller called Lorie to reassure him that this was not the case, and that 'Smith' had taken some time off to be with his family. Droller told Lorie that thought was being given to making a 'unilateral arrangement' with his group'. Droller put this information in a cable for JMASH on 25 July 1960, and also asked the based to have Smith contact Lorie 'soonest' to reassure him the matter was 'not fully settled yet'. Two days later (27 July) JMASH referenced the HQS cable (DIR 41508 - 104-10193-10119), and reported that Enzel had resumed 'daily contact with the QDCOVE/Lorie group'. These two cables, therefore, prove that Enzel is another name for Jim Smith."
104-10193-10404: DISPATCH:FORWARDING OF CLIPPINGS
8/16/60 memo from Wesley B. Enzel, Chief of Base, JMASH, to Chief, WHD: "Forwarded here for Headquarters information are one clipping and one handout representing the most recent attack, parry and riposte in the MRR (Artime) and MRR (Lorie) duel."
8/24/60 cable from MASH to Director: "MASH uneasy large number (paramiitary) training candidates who had to be culled by AMRASP/FRD before 23 Aug shipment finalized...Cream of MASH area pro-(FRD) Cubans, particularly those who can be easily handled as groups, already dispatched or scheduled for balance (of) August flights. Substantial number (approximately 100) who might otherwise be available have been assigned civilian commissions or specialist category being held with Enzel approval for forthcoming maritime use. Most recruiting now down to personal proselytizing and negotiation. Enzel called meeting 21 Aug - (FRD) leaders directly involved (in) recruiting efforts. Present were AMWAIL-5, Martin, Oscar Diaz, Camino, Joaquin Sanjenis/AMOT-2, Sosa and AMEER...When Enzel persisted (in) talking figures they repeated assurance (of) availability of 350-500 bodies from Cuban exiles but demonstrated same...vagueness as to how and when..."
