Cryptonym: KUENAST

KUENAST was the cryptonym in November 1963 for the West German LfV, which were the Field Offices of the BfV (Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Internal Security Service). Described as the equivalent of the FBI in West Germany.

Definition: LfV, which were the (West German) Field Offices of the BfV (Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Internal Security Service). CAVATA-16: Cryptonym for Hubert Schruebbers. CAVATA-17: Cryptonym for Erich Wenger as Liaison contact at BfV..." As stated in the description for LfV, The Internal Security Service was the West German equivalent of the FBI.

SUBJ ref is HARVARD agent disposal case WIROGUE (David Tzitzichvili) registered Camp King where he processed 28 Aug 63 for political recognition in order legalize him for resettlement. 2. Case discussed with Mr. John Willms who will visit Bonn 5 Feb and will take matter up directly with Chief, CAVATA telling him this AIS case and ask him not pursue. 3. Please advise priority of you desire Willms check in with you prior his visit CAVATA."

02/02/63: Cable from Bonn to Director: Slugline HARVARD LCIMPROVE CAVATA TECHS WIROGUE: REF FRAN 6399 (IN 60224): "1. Since this is apparently a KUBARK (CIA) case and original query came from CAVATA to KUBARK element OCA, fail understand need for transmitting reply to CAVATA via 513th rep. Also do not feel it necessary contact CAVATA chief in response routine working level CAVATA query. This may be attempt on Willms part to find excuse visit CAVATA chief. 2. If this routine CABEZONE case feel stage I debriefing and assessment which normally passed CAVATA will satisfy latter's needs. On other hand if KUBARK has continuing operational interest as paragraph 2 implies we can inform CAVATA accordingly through normal channels. 3. Please advise. C/S Comment: *FRAN asked Bonn advise if desires Willms check in with Bonn prior visit CAVATA."


12/4/63 cable from Hamburg, CIA to Director: "Stefan Knibba...apparently defected from Polish fishing trawler (in) Sweden May 53, screened by (CIA) Sweden and Frankfurt but never used. He dropped Jan 54 as inept and handling and control problem...no record subject from Oct 55 to June 60 when traced by KUENAST (West German Security Service) who suspected Subject of Eastern Intel activity. Subject picked up 12 Oct 61 in Cuxhaven for KUENAST interrogation...Subject tracked by A-2 July 59; traced by 513th July 60; 513th dropped interest Aug. 60. BEVISION/Michal Goleniewski (according to John Newman, the one who initially spurred CI chief Jim Angleton to begin his molehunts) used Subject name and his West German passport for illegal (Polish Intelligence Service) trips to West. (Goleniewski) not aware of Subject had returned (to the Federal Republic in) 59 when he informed (of his) expressed opinion (that) Knibba (was with Polish intelligence)..."

03/10/66: Cable from Bonn to Frankfurt: Slugline CABEZONE HARVARD WIROGUE: "CAVATA reports WIROGUE (David Tzitzichvili) lost his job 25 Jan 66 either for loafing or carelessness. He and his employer agreed on the separation. His present employment is unknown to CAVATA."
