02/10/54: Telegram from Guatemala Station to Operation PBSUCCESS Headquarters in Florida: "079. Re GUAT 015. 1. Major Enrique Trinidad Oliva (note: SECANT) released 6 Feb due lack of evidence supporting charge (illegible) 9 Feb). 2. Lic Manuel Oreliano Cardona expressed belief Oliva may have been forced to reveal details local opposition movement (source: JMBLUG-7). Station has no evidence supporting this belief."

05/19/54: Cable from Guatemala City to Director: RYBAT PBSUCCESS: "1. Anton Refregier and Asa Zatz appeared at boarding house Gueroult, GUAT City, on 30 April. Were accompanied and vouched for by Alfonso Orantes, one of directors of Casa de la Cultura Guatemalteca (Communist), who told boarding house owner the CCG would pay all bills for SUBJs. 2. Both believed to be traveling on U.S. passports issued to them in Mexico although this not definite. Names do not appear on available travel lists. Since their arrival they have received telephone calls from Jaime Diaz (also RECD Diag) (portion missing being SVCD) from private secretary to Arbenz. Both currently in Puerto Barrios for unknown business. Refregier claims to be painter and Zatz claims to be writer. Source claims they are technicians in unknown field. 3. Refregier leaving for Mexico on 21 May and may not return. Receives mail from Anderson Cristian, 529 (BIS) Polanco, Mexico D.F. Zatz receives mail from one Aida Kotlarsky 147 East 19 Street New York. 4. For (REDACTION): Request check consulate records ascertain if passports issued subjects and any pertinent information. Source JMBLUG-7 from (REDACTION). 5. Unconfirmed rumor circulating to effect three technicians sent here from Europe for purpose instructing and briefing also on operation new weapons. Possibility exists subjects may be those technicians. Cable Secretariat Comment: Mr. (REDACTION) WH, notified receipt of the above message at 0010 20 May."

05/26/54: Cable from Guatemala City to Director: RYBAT PBSUCCESS: RE: GUAT 672 (IN 11601): "1. Following furnished to JMBLUG-7 by IDEN A: A. Three Russian mechanics accompanied Alfhem to WSBURNT (Guatemala) and travelled to capital on first train from port. Purpose: To clean, assemble heavy guns which part of shipment in order have them ready within 30 days. Russian tanks in shipment. B. Three secret agents from WSHOOFS (Honduras) arrested night 21 May in Chiquimula. Brought to capital for elimination. Identities unknown. Evaluation F-6."

06/07/54: Cable from Guatemala City to Director: "1. (REDACTION) frequent informant of JMBLUG-7 stated 7 June that unspecified number officers and cadets from Escuela Politecnica sent Honduran Guatemala border to inspect new arms defected en masse 6 June crossed border into Honduras. 2. (REDACTION) also reported (REDACTION) will seek political asylum Salvadoran Embassy tonight 7 June. Immediate source C-3. 3. Above unconfirmed. JMBLUG-7 believes highly possible since Calligeris (Carlos Castillo Armas) former director Escuela Politecnica and well liked there. Investigating. Request (REDACTION) check reported border crossing soonest. Cable Secretariat Comment: Treated as RYBAT/PBSUCCESS (a high level of secrecy required to protect the message/project to overthrow - "without bloodshed, if possible" - the Arbenz government in Guatemala in 1954)."

06/10/54: Cable from Guatemala to Director (handwritten note: "DCI added"): RYBAT PBSUCCESS: "(REDACTION) travel agent, (REDACTION), advisor to Chinese Consulate informed JMBLUG-7 SMILAX (Colonel Enrique Parinello de Leon, Guatemalan Army Chief of Staff) asked to resign 9 June, refused, restricted to residence 10 June. Action followed meeting army officers and Arbenz where group headed by SMILAX opposed Arbenz approved plan to arm campesinos and workers. Meeting split army and conflict opposing groups momentarily. EVAL: Rumor, possibly true."
