Return to Main Crypts Page

Definition:
Manuel Villafana Martinez, a CIA agent - also known as Angel Lorenzo Saavedra Correa. AMLITAINT-1 was a long time friend of Jaime Varela Canosa (LITAG-1), naval attaché at the Cuban Embassy in Mexico City until he defected in March 1960.
Status:
Probable
Discussion:
Based on the similarity of their cryptonyms, the timing of his defection, and their relationship with Varela/LITAG-1, LITAINT-1 & AMLITAINT-1 appear identical. A dispatch in 1/64 stated that AMLITAINT-1, by true name, was among those agent personnel exposed to AMAGREE-1. In addition, a dispatch in 9/64 stated that AMLITAINT-1 recruited AMHINT-56 (Juan Francisco Blanco Fernandez) in May, 1964, in the Miami area, for a PM commando group. The group was led by AMLITAINT-1. A cable from JMWAVE on May 8, 1964, which included the slug ZORRO (a cache operation conducted by a four man team to provide weapons and explosives for Rolando Cubela inside Cuba), stated that AMLITAINT-1 (P/A will remain on Neptune) was part of an AMLILAC ("Commando Groups" - Comandos Mambises and others involved in infiltrations into Cuba) cache team. Furthermore, a dispatch in 8/64, stated that AMLITAINT-1 dismissed AMNUBA-1. A 6/65 dispatch stated that AMLITAINT-1 reported that AMBIDDY-1 (Manuel Artime Buesa) had returned to the Miami area and was in contact with many of his AMWORLD members. Artime allegedly told them that he was re-opening the training camps for those who were in the infiltration and guerrilla warfare teams. Most of Artime's weapons and some ships from AMWORLD were apparently still available to him. A cable on 1/19/66, stated that "WAVE officer on 17 Jan contacted AMLITAINT-1 who long time friend Varela to determine whether any basis Varela statements. A-1 stated that had seen Varela last time Nov 65 at which time Varela stated he working with ODBEAT (probably Defense Intelligence Agency) along with Peruyero of 2506 Brigade Vets Association." Moreover, a cable on 1/27/66 containing the slugs AMTABBY-27/AMLITAINT-1/AMWORLD, mentioned ERACORN-1 (probably General Anastasio Somoza), AMBIDDY-1 and ERFACT-1.

A dispatch in 1/68 stated that AMLITAINT-1 dismissed AMHINT-56 because of "reduction of assets/Subject was on INACTIVE STATUS/AMLILAC Reserve Force since 9/1/66."
